African Great Lakes Initiative of Friends Peace Teams - Listening to Rape Survivors Project. In May of 2010, FMA Peace & Social Concerns committee facilitated the visit of Zawadi Nikuze to the Austin area. The report on this visit is here. In a follow up letter [September 16, 2010], David Zarembka, Coordinator of the project, wrote the following: This email is going out to all of you who helped arrange Zawadi Nikuze's speaking tour in the spring. As I had previously reported to you, after a very difficult pregnancy, she recently lost her baby. I am happy to report that she has recovered and is returning to this vital work. Up to this point her work this year has been supported by a grant from Philadelphia Yearly Meeting's Legacy Grant Fund. We would like to build on what was accomplished this year. I have attached a report of the work so far this year with the outline of the proposal that we would like to implement. Fortunately we have $3500 which were donated for a micro-credit project to the HROC-North Kivu program which we can use as a down payment on this proposal. AGLI/HROC-North Kivu requests donations for this project from individuals, meetings and churches, civic organizations, grants, and other possibilities. We ask that you circulate this report and proposal to others who might be interested. We would also appreciate your individual support. Donations can be made out to “Friends Peace Teams/AGLI” with a notation of “North Kivu rape survivors” and mailed to 1001 Park Avenue, St Louis, MO 63104. Donations may also be made through the AGLI webpage. Thanks for you help on the speaking tour and your consideration of this request.

Margret Hofmann, member of Friends Meeting of Austin since the early 1950's, was called to write a pamphlet expressing her concerns regarding nuclear arms and relating her experiences as a survivor of the Dresden firebombing of World War II. Although some of the suggestions for resolution (e.g. re-unification of Germany) are now moot, this document speaks 'truth to power' in ways that address our war-saturated culture even today.
